A project trip to Finland evolved to include a trip to Sallatunturi in the Arctic Circle.

I was curious to see the world from the perspective of late winter in Lapland/Arctic Circle. So I and my friends, Michael and Sue Saffle, boarded an overnight train in Helsinki for a 14 hour trip due north. At the end of the line (in Rovaniemi in the Arctic Circle) we hopped a bus to get to the hamlet of Salla. From Salla another bus took us to Sallatunturi in eastern Lapland, about 2/3 up into the Arctic Circle.

What a profound, spare, haunting beauty I found there. Spearmint for the mind. Solitude; blue-white cold; sheer hot saunas; traditional food and drink. The combination fires the imagination.
