Dyeing the Fibers Dye chemicals.
Fibers in pots ready to dye.

All fibers are hand-dyed in the studio. To free myself from making color or fiber texture compromise in a piece, I studied dye methods through California College of Arts and Crafts at the Susan Druding Jones studio. The dye powders I use are aniline. All colors and shades of color used in my work I mix from the primary dye powder colors: clear yellow and golden yellow, blue, red and orange-red, and black.

The ability to create any shade of any color on the fiber texture of preference is necessary for full expression. It is also very beneficial for the practical side of working on a piece that is commissioned. I can color match the tapestry to the environment where it will be installed ("hang"). No, I do not feel that color matching (within reason) limits my expression. In fact, it has broadened my palette.
